AT&T 3G MicroCell

So if you have AT&T, you probably are use to dropped calls and lousy 3G speeds (Especially in your home or office). Well instead of actually fixing the problem, AT&T has come up with the 3g MicroCell. While it isn’t exactly the fix I was looking for, it seems to do the trick.

The AT&T 3G MicroCell acts like a mini cellular tower in your home or small business environment. It connects to AT&T’s network via your existing broadband Internet service (such as DSL or cable) and is designed to support up to four simultaneous users in a home or small business setting. With AT&T 3G MicroCell, you receive improved cellular signal performance for both voice calls and cellular data applications like picture messaging and surfing the Web.

Dork Stuff

  • Improves signal strength (Usually to 5 bars)
  • Improves 3G reliability and speed
  • Only costs $50 if you sign up for the $20 / month Unlimited calling plan (As of this post)
  • All calls placed from the MicroCell are transferred to AT&T’s cellular network once you are out of range of the device

Currently these are only available in certain markets but based on reviews, I think it sound like a sound investment. You can jump over to AT&T’s 3G MicroCell site and sign up to be notified when it is released in your area by clicking on the Availability Checker.

Availability: It is currently being tested in two markets in the North East but should be available to the rest of us by the middle of 2010.
